The gladiator of
the canine race, the Bull Terrier is renowned for his great strength,
agility and courage.
He originated in
England, where he was selectively bred for his prowess in the dogfight
pits. Powerfully built, muscular, symmetrical and active, with a keen
determined and intelligent expression, the Bull Terrier is indeed an
impressive sight. He is still inherently aggressive towards other dogs and
therefore is usually best suited to being the only dog in the household.
He is never the
less an exceedingly friendly dog, with a sweet disposition and thrives on
affection. With people, he is the kindest of dogs and is famous for his
soft, benevolent attitude.
Being such a
powerful dog, the Bull Terrier requires firm training, although he is
extremely stubborn and may not immediately respond to his owner's
commands. He also needs a good deal of exercise which should always be
onlead in public areas due to his tendency to fight with other dogs.
Having a strong constitution, he can take the rough with the smooth in
life. He is very resilient, for example, standing extremes of heat very
well.
